Lead Course

Lead epic routes and traverses on Rockit lead nights!

Our lead climbing course is designed for indoor lead climbing at Rockit for climbers wanting to expand their climbing experience. If you are keen to lead indoors but have limited or no experience with lead climbing, this course is for you!

This Lead Course is not for first time climbers as we require you to become competent with our top rope belay system and have a strong climbing ability (climbing grades 17+) in our gym.

 

You will learn how to set up and prepare for lead, how to lead climb and how to lead belay. An assessment at the end of the session will determine issue of lead license. If requirements are not met, lead license will not be issued - participants may be given an opportunity to re-test on a different day with no extra charge.

The course includes:

  • Entry to the gym

  • 3 hour lead climbing and belaying lesson and assessment

  • All required gear supplied by us (excluding harness & shoes)

You will need to bring along a sport climbing harness with dual tie in points, this must be <5 years old.

Climbers who have passed the course and received a Lead License are able to lead climb on the scheduled Rockit Lead Nights. Once at a sufficient level of experience, climbers can then participate in the 'Anytime Lead' assessment at no extra cost. 

Anytime Lead Assessment

Lead Climb anytime!

Rockit now has 6 permanent lead walls set up available for lead climbing at anytime. With multiple lead routes and traverses set on the walls and our 2 epic overhangs,  you are sure to have a pretty pumpy and satisfying lead session!

If you have sufficient experience with lead climbing and can safely lead belay, you might be able to skip the lead course and use these walls to lead climb anytime! First you must pass our 'Anytime Lead' assessment where you will be assessed on your lead climbing and belaying ability and safety.

If the assessment is not passed, you can join our lead course and then get re-assessed for 'Anytime Lead' at a future date at no extra cost.

Assessments can be completed on a lead night or during our open hours when a qualified staff member is available. Contact us to organize an assessment outside of a lead night for you and a friend (minimum 2 people).

The assessment includes:

  • Entry to the gym

  • 30 minute lead climbing and belaying assessment

  • All required gear supplied by us (excluding harness & shoes)

You will need to bring along a sport climbing harness with dual tie in points, this must be <5 years old.

 

Cost per person:

Members - $10

Non-members - $25 (also includes entry to they gym)

Lead assessment is free if you have previously completed the lead course.

Group Lead Course

Group courses are run as required when the wait-list is full. Participants will be contacted for the next course. Call, email, or talk to staff to add your name to the wait-list.

Cost per person: 

Members - $40

Non-members - $80

Lead Course & Assessment 'Need to Know'

  • Lead Climbers under 15 years, can only undertake the Lead Course with coaches recommendation.

  • To receive a lead belay license, climbers must be 15 years of age or older.

  • Bookings are essential for both the group and the private Lead Courses. Contact us at rockitsuncoast@gmail.com or see staff next time you are in the gym to put your name onto our wait-list or to organize a private course. 

  • Climbing harness with dual tie in points is required for the course (no rental harnesses).

  • Participants must have been run through a Top Rope induction at Rockit before participating in the Lead Course or the 'Anytime Lead' assessment.

  • Participants must be competent at climbing Rockit top rope grades of 17+.

  • Refunds will not be given if the course or assessment is not passed. Opportunity will be given to be re-assessed.

Private Lead Course

Private Courses are run when an instructor is available. Call, email or talk to staff to arrange a private lead course. Must be a minimum of 2 people.

Cost per person:

Members - $60

Non-members - $120
